Comparison of PBO solvers in a dependency solving domain
Linux package managers have to deal with dependencies and conflicts of
packages required to be installed by the user. As an NP-complete problem, this
is a hard task to solve. In this context, several approaches have been pursued.
Apt-pbo is a package manager based on the apt project that encodes the
dependency solving problem as a pseudo-Boolean optimization (PBO) problem. This
paper compares different PBO solvers and their effectiveness on solving the
dependency solving problem.Comment: In Proceedings LoCoCo 2010, arXiv:1007.083
Subjective Postural Vertical and Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS)
ObjectiveThe origin of the AIS is unknown. Several studies in AIS have shown disturbances of orthostatic postural control and somatosensory modality. The orthostatic postural control is the ability to organize the upright position on the earth-vertical, by multisensory central integration, especially somatosensory information. Our hypothesis is that the somatosensory disturbances in the AIS involve change in the organization of orthostatic postural control, around an erroneous central representation of verticality. Our objective is to test, in the AIS, the existence of a disturbance of the somatosensory modality in orthostatic postural control by measuring the Subjective Postural Vertical (SPV).MethodsUncontrolled preliminary study on 8 adolescents with SIA (7 girls, 13.8±0.83 years, 38.8±10.4°angle). Test=SPV measurement, vision obscured, head-trunk-members strapped, sitting on a seat, fixed to a German vertical wheel athletic gymnastics (external diameter: 1.90 m), with electronic inclinometer that measures the rotational tilt of the seat, with reference to the gravitational vertical. From 45° inclination, the subject is tilted (1°/sec) and evaluates the alignment with the vertical gravitational.ResultsAIS SPV=7.48±4.86° with a tilt predominance to the right. It is impossible to realize statistical evaluation in this preliminary study. Our results are comparable with those reported in pusher patient.DiscussionThis preliminary study shows a disturbance in the assessment of SPV in the AIS. Disorders of the central integration of somatosensory modality could explain this result. The authors are grateful to the Harps Association's members, for their helpful comments
Verification of Item Usage Rules in Product Configuration
In the development of complex products product configuration systems are often used to support the development process. Item Usage Rules (IURs) are conditions for including specific items in products bills of materials based on a high-level product description. Large number of items and significant complexity of IURs make it difficult to maintain and analyze IURs manually. In this paper we present an automated approach for verifying IURs, which guarantees the presence of exactly one item from a predefined set in each product, as well as that an IUR can be reformulated without changing the set of products for which the item was included
Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: an emerging fungal pathogen
ABSTRACTAcute invasive pulmonary aspergillosis occurs predominantly in immunocompromised hosts, with increasing numbers of cases of invasive aspergillosis among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) being reported. Among 13 cases of invasive aspergillosis diagnosed in COPD patients admitted to the intensive care unit with acute respiratory distress, the only risk factor for invasive fungal infection was corticosteroid treatment. Invasive aspergillosis should be suspected in COPD patients receiving steroid treatment who have extensive pulmonary infiltrates. Survival depends on rapid diagnosis and early appropriate treatment. A decrease or interruption of steroid treatment should be considered as part of the overall therapeutic strategy
Generalized Totalizer Encoding for Pseudo-Boolean Constraints
Pseudo-Boolean constraints, also known as 0-1 Integer Linear Constraints, are
used to model many real-world problems. A common approach to solve these
constraints is to encode them into a SAT formula. The runtime of the SAT solver
on such formula is sensitive to the manner in which the given pseudo-Boolean
constraints are encoded. In this paper, we propose generalized Totalizer
encoding (GTE), which is an arc-consistency preserving extension of the
Totalizer encoding to pseudo-Boolean constraints. Unlike some other encodings,
the number of auxiliary variables required for GTE does not depend on the
magnitudes of the coefficients. Instead, it depends on the number of distinct
combinations of these coefficients. We show the superiority of GTE with respect
to other encodings when large pseudo-Boolean constraints have low number of
distinct coefficients. Our experimental results also show that GTE remains
competitive even when the pseudo-Boolean constraints do not have this
characteristic.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. To be published in 21st International

Spatiotemporal communication with synchronized optical chaos
We propose a model system that allows communication of spatiotemporal
information using an optical chaotic carrier waveform. The system is based on
broad-area nonlinear optical ring cavities, which exhibit spatiotemporal chaos
in a wide parameter range. Message recovery is possible through chaotic
synchronization between transmitter and receiver. Numerical simulations
demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, and the benefit of the
parallelism of information transfer with optical wavefronts.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Exercise training reveals inflexibility of the diaphragm in an animal model of patients with obesity-driven heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction
Background: Respiratory muscle weakness contributes to exercise intolerance in patients with heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)âa condition characterized by multiple comorbidities with few proven treatments. We aimed, therefore, to provide novel insight into the underlying diaphragmatic alterations that occur in HFpEF by using an obese cardiometabolic rat model and further assessed whether exercise training performed only after the development of overt HFpEF could reverse impairments. Methods and Results: Obese ZSF1 rats (n=12) were compared with their lean controls (n=8) at 20 weeks, with 3 additional groups of obese ZSF1 rats compared at 28 weeks following 8 weeks of either sedentary behavior (n=13), highâintensity interval training (n=11), or moderateâcontinuous training (n=11). Obese rats developed an obvious HFpEF phenotype at 20 and 28 weeks. In the diaphragm at 20 weeks, HFpEF induced a shift towards an oxidative phenotype and a fiber hypertrophy paralleled by a lower protein expression in MuRF1 and MuRF2, yet mitochondrial and contractile functional impairments were observed. At 28 weeks, neither the exercise training regimen of highâintensity interval training or moderateâcontinuous training reversed any of the diaphragm alterations induced by HFpEF. Conclusions: This study, using a wellâcharacterized rat model of HFpEF underpinned by multiple comorbidities and exercise intolerance (ie, one that closely resembles the patient phenotype), provides evidence that diaphragm alterations and dysfunction induced in overt HFpEF are not reversed following 8 weeks of aerobic exercise training. As such, whether alternative therapeutic interventions are required to treat respiratory muscle weakness in HFpEF warrants further investigation
Ensemble prediction for nowcasting with a convection-permitting model - II: forecast error statistics
A 24-member ensemble of 1-h high-resolution forecasts over the Southern United Kingdom is used to study short-range forecast error statistics. The initial conditions are found from perturbations from an ensemble transform Kalman filter. Forecasts from this system are assumed to lie within the bounds of forecast error of an operational forecast system. Although noisy, this system is capable of producing physically reasonable statistics which are analysed and compared to statistics implied from a variational assimilation system. The variances for temperature errors for instance show structures that reflect convective activity. Some variables, notably potential temperature and specific humidity perturbations, have autocorrelation functions that deviate from 3-D isotropy at the convective-scale (horizontal scales less than 10 km). Other variables, notably the velocity potential for horizontal divergence perturbations, maintain 3-D isotropy at all scales. Geostrophic and hydrostatic balances are studied by examining correlations between terms in the divergence and vertical momentum equations respectively. Both balances are found to decay as the horizontal scale decreases. It is estimated that geostrophic balance becomes less important at scales smaller than 75 km, and hydrostatic balance becomes less important at scales smaller than 35 km, although more work is required to validate these findings. The implications of these results for high-resolution data assimilation are discussed
Experimental observation of spatial antibunching of photons
We report an interference experiment that shows transverse spatial
antibunching of photons. Using collinear parametric down-conversion in a
Young-type fourth-order interference setup we show interference patterns that
violate the classical Schwarz inequality and should not exist at all in a
classical description.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
